Toby Collyer
Manchester United have recalled midfielder Toby Collyer from his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion, as confirmed by both clubs. The decision comes in light of Collyer’s recent calf injury, which he sustained in a match against Birmingham City in November. The 21-year-old, who made his Premier League debut under Erik ten Hag, was initially loaned to the West Midlands club to gain senior football experience. However, the arrangement has been cut short at the start of the January transfer window.
West Bromwich Albion stated: “Toby Collyer has been recalled from his loan at The Hawthorns by parent club Manchester United. The 21-year-old midfielder made 12 appearances for the Baggies before sustaining a calf injury in the 1-1 draw against Birmingham City in November. Everyone at The Hawthorns wishes Toby well for his future career.”
Manchester United explained on their website: “A highly rated talent with a tremendous work ethic, Toby returns to United to focus on his recovery and perhaps bolster Ruben Amorim’s options in midfield.”
Collyer, who made his Premier League debut against Liverpool, is expected to focus on his recovery at Manchester United. The club is hopeful that he will soon be back in contention, especially given the current injury issues in their midfield. Both Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are currently sidelined, forcing manager Ruben Amorim to rely on a makeshift partnership of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro, which has yielded mixed results. Additionally, Mason Mount remains unavailable, further complicating the midfield situation.
In Collyer’s absence, Amorim has turned to Jack Fletcher to strengthen the midfield in recent matches. The United head coach emphasized the importance of not risking players’ health, especially with upcoming fixtures. After a draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Amorim addressed the media regarding the potential return of injured players for the clash with Leeds.
Ruben Amorim said: “I don’t know. I have to check. I’m not going to risk anyone, to lose them for one month or two months. So, we’ll try to arrange solutions. Again, let’s see, and then we will try to win the next one with no risks for the players.”
The recall of Toby Collyer underscores Manchester United’s urgent need to manage their injury-hit squad effectively. With key players out, the club is looking for solutions to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League. The situation remains fluid, with the hope that Collyer and others will recover swiftly to reinforce the team’s midfield options.
