Steven Gerrard Manager
When Steven Gerrard took over as manager of Aston Villa in November 2021, many believed it was a stepping stone towards his eventual return to Liverpool as a manager. Since leaving Villa, Gerrard has been actively involved in punditry and recently discussed his dreams of managing Liverpool. Despite his ambitions, Gerrard expressed his support for current Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who has been under pressure recently.
Steven Gerrard said: “I don’t want Arne Slot to lose his job. I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league. I’m a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool.”
Gerrard’s comments reflect his unwavering support for Liverpool and his desire to see the club succeed under its current management. His loyalty to the club remains evident, even as he harbors aspirations of one day managing the team himself.
Reflecting on his time at Aston Villa, Gerrard opened up about the challenges he faced during his tenure. He took over Villa when they were struggling, and despite initial improvements, his second season ended on a disappointing note.
Steven Gerrard said: “Going into the second season, I’m thinking: ‘We’ve taken Villa from 17th to seventh, eighth, ninth. We’re in a good place. We’ve made three or four really strong signings. Let’s go for top ten, maybe have a go at the League Cup.’ We lost 2–0 to Bournemouth. We were poor — tactically poor, players didn’t turn up — and it was a shock result. We bounced back against Everton, won 1–0, steadied it a bit. But when we lost momentum towards the end of October, I didn’t feel like I could pull it back.”
Gerrard’s candid reflection on his spell at Villa highlights the difficulties he encountered, particularly in maintaining momentum and managing team dynamics. His departure from Villa in October 2022 followed a 3-0 defeat by Fulham, leaving the team just above the relegation zone.
The former England captain’s insights provide a glimpse into the complexities of football management and the pressures that come with it. As Gerrard continues his punditry work, his passion for Liverpool and his managerial aspirations remain strong.
