Unai Emery
Aston Villa’s former striker Marlon Harewood has voiced his support for manager Unai Emery, predicting that the Spaniard could end the club’s 30-year wait for a major trophy. Harewood’s optimism is rooted in Villa’s current strong performance in both the Premier League and Europa League, where they stand third and are poised to begin their FA Cup campaign next month.
Marlon Harewood said: “They can win something definitely. They’ve got a great opportunity to do that and if they continue the way they’re playing, I can’t see why not because of the players that they’ve got. Then if they keep everyone fit, keep everyone happy and everyone singing off the same hymn sheet, then I don’t see why not because the way they’re playing now probably Villa’s the team to watch at the moment. I’m pleased for them because Villa’s one of those sleeping giant teams and the way they’ve been performing, he’s really turned them around. They were struggling at the beginning of the season, and you can see how good of a manager he is when situations like this arise because he’s gone on a mad unbeaten run. It’s amazing. He’s got the lads playing, I watched them at the weekend against West Ham, and to be fair, West Ham came out really strong. But Villa seem to hold their own and gritted through it, they’ve got a real understanding of how they play, players that look after each other, and they came strong towards the end. The way they scored a goal and won the game, you can just tell they’re a decent outfit and they mean business this year, he’s got them playing really well.”
Harewood’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among Villa supporters who have witnessed the club’s near misses in recent years. Under Martin O’Neill’s management, Villa reached two FA Cup and two League Cup finals but failed to secure a trophy. Emery’s tenure has already seen the team reach the last four of the FA Cup and the Conference League, as well as the quarter-finals of the Champions League, signaling a potential turning point in Villa’s fortunes.
The former striker’s confidence in Emery is bolstered by Villa’s resilience and tactical acumen, as demonstrated in their recent match against West Ham. Despite facing a strong opponent, Villa showcased their ability to adapt and secure a victory, highlighting the team’s growth and Emery’s impact.
As Villa prepares for their upcoming FA Cup campaign, the anticipation among fans continues to build. With Emery at the helm and the team performing at a high level, the possibility of ending their long-standing trophy drought seems more attainable than ever.
