Wilfried Gnonto
Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto has been making an impact off the bench, providing two assists in as many games. His latest contribution came in the form of a perfectly placed cross that allowed teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score a vital goal against Liverpool. This marked Calvert-Lewin’s fourth consecutive goal in Premier League matches, making him only the third English player to achieve such a feat for Leeds United. Despite his impressive performance, Gnonto was quick to shift the spotlight onto his teammate.
Gnonto said: “I think it’s easier when you play with a striker like Dom. You just know that you have to put it in that area and he’s going to attack it. I thought it was quite a good ball, but he did a lot of the job, and I’m happy for him.”
Gnonto, who has been eager for more playing time, has started just one game since August and was substituted at halftime in that match against Manchester City. Despite this, the Italian forward remains humble and focused on making the most of his opportunities.
Gnonto added: “It’s not easy, the team is playing well. But at the same time, I have to try and use all my chances. I think I did it today. I did it against Liverpool and I just have to keep going like this.”
Reflecting on the team’s recent 1-1 draw, Gnonto acknowledged the challenges faced during the match but expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
Gnonto reflected: “Obviously, we wanted to win. We tried to win, but today was difficult. We played lots of long balls and it was kind of like a fight, so we are happy with the point and we move on. We know that we can get back into the game even if it’s quite late in the game, but I feel like today we showed our character. We didn’t make it easy for ourselves, but we got back into the game and we’re happy.”
Gnonto’s ability to deliver crucial assists and his positive outlook, even when not starting regularly, highlight his value to the team. His contributions have been pivotal in maintaining Leeds United’s competitive edge in the Premier League. As the season progresses, Gnonto’s determination to seize every opportunity could prove invaluable for both his personal development and the team’s success.
