Manchester City achieved a significant victory by defeating Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu, marking their biggest win of the season. This victory has injected a surge of confidence into Pep Guardiola’s squad, as indicated by Josko Gvardiol. Despite an inconsistent start to the season, with five losses, the team remains a contender for the Premier League title and a strong run in the Champions League. The win in Madrid has propelled City to fourth in the European league phase and brought them within two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. This result could be a turning point for a new-look squad under Guardiola’s leadership.
Josko Gvardiol said: “I agree with you. We know how difficult it is to play here, and we’ve seen so many games, so many teams struggle to play here. But it’s not the first time that we play here. Of course, we analyse them at the moment, maybe they are not in really good form.”
He continued: “I think so. I think we’re doing good. We go game by game, not to look too far ahead. And we have a good team. So I think we have a good team and we want a fight.”
Gvardiol added: “I’m super proud of him, I’m really happy for him as well. He’s young, but to be honest with you, two days ago I was thinking that when I see him playing next to me, I feel like he’s 30. I think he has a quality. There’s a reason he’s in the starting XI. He just needs to keep going. He has full support from me, from everyone in the team, from the manager, staff as well, from the club.”
The victory against Real Madrid was not just a testament to City’s capabilities but also highlighted the potential of their young talents. Nico O’Reilly, who has taken over Gvardiol’s position at left-back, played a pivotal role in the win. His performance kept the £31 million left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri out of the team, and he scored the equalizing goal in Madrid, showcasing his maturity and skill.
City’s triumph at the Bernabeu is a promising sign as they prepare for a challenging Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace. The team is hopeful that this victory will spark a winning streak similar to those they have delivered in past seasons. With four successive wins already this season, City aims to extend this run further, building on the momentum gained from their success in Madrid.
