The much-anticipated Wear-Tyne derby between Sunderland and Newcastle United is set to take place this Sunday, marking the first league meeting between the two sides at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light since 2017. With a 2 pm kick-off, a capacity crowd is expected to witness the clash between Régis Le Bris’ Sunderland and Eddie Howe’s Newcastle. Here’s everything you need to know about the match, including TV coverage, team news, and safety measures.
Northumbria Police said: “Ever since the fixture was announced, extensive discussions have been held with all parties, and planning has been ongoing to facilitate the safe delivery of the game. The wider policing operation will be supported by partners at Nexus, British Transport Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, and the North East Ambulance Service – as well as both football clubs. While a large proportion of away fans are being transported via coach to the Stadium of Light, the remainder will be able to make their own way to the match.”
Kevin Storey, Operations Director at Nexus, said: “The Tyne and Wear Metro will have a significant role to play in helping supporters get to and from the derby game at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. We have worked closely with Northumbria Police and our other partners on the transport plans for the match so that all our customers can have a safe and enjoyable day. This will help to ensure that everything runs smoothly, and that the event stays trouble free.”
Chief Inspector Pete Kooper said: “We’re incredibly excited to see a return of the Tyne-Wear derby with fans after so many years without this historic fixture. While I’m sure the vast majority of fans will be looking to simply enjoy the game and the atmosphere, we’ll react emphatically to anyone who uses the opportunity to engage in violence or criminality. We urge everyone travelling to or from the game to report any concerns they have to us by texting 61016 or by calling 999 in an emergency. Violence and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are working closely with our partners to ensure that everyone can enjoy the game without interference or disruption.”
The derby will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Ultra HDR, with Peter Bankes appointed as the referee. He will be assisted by Eddie Smart and Blake Antrobus on the lines, while Simon Hooper will serve as the fourth official. Stuart Attwell will oversee VAR operations at Stockley Park, assisted by Alex Chilowicz.
Sunderland will be without Aji Alese, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, and Luke O’Nien, who is serving a suspension. Reinildo, who missed the recent defeat to Manchester City due to a minor groin injury, is expected to be fit for the match. Habib Diarra is also likely to miss out as he continues his return from injury. Meanwhile, Newcastle will travel without Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, Sven Botman, and William Osula due to various injuries, leaving Eddie Howe with crucial decisions to make regarding team selection.
Safety measures have been a significant focus, with Northumbria Police confirming extensive planning to ensure a secure environment for all attendees. Temporary changes to Metro services are planned to manage fan movement and reduce congestion. Fans are advised to plan their travel in advance and adhere to guidance from emergency services and stewards to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
