Manchester City secured a crucial 2-1 victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, advancing their position in the Champions League’s top eight. Despite this significant win, manager Pep Guardiola emphasized the need for improvement if City is to clinch the Champions League title this season. The match saw City overturn an early deficit, with Nico O’Reilly equalizing Rodrygo’s opener and Erling Haaland securing the win with a penalty, propelling City to fourth in the league phase table.
Pep Guardiola said: “City have to improve from their performance in beating Real Madrid. Manchester City must improve if they are to win the Champions League this season despite seeing his side claim a significant victory against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu. I’m so pleased for the players, for the soul and the heart and how we run. Here, Anfield, Arsenal, Barcelona, when teams arrive we have to do better but knowing the players we will improve, that’s for sure. When we have five, six, seven players playing first or second game here, they have to live the experience.”
Guardiola continued: “I’m 100% convinced they would raise their games when it mattered in the knockout stages. But at the same time, I know in February and March the level to arrive in the semi-finals and final requires a better performance than today. We will work on it. It’s not enough to be there like today. I said from the beginning, I liked the vibe of the team. They fight each other, they love each other, they go there. We have the will do it.”
Guardiola’s comments highlight his belief in the team’s potential to elevate their performance in the crucial stages of the competition. City, with 13 points from their first six Champions League matches, have already surpassed last season’s tally of 10 points from eight games. They are also closely trailing Arsenal in the Premier League standings, indicating a promising trajectory.
City’s recent victory marked a turnaround from their previous four unsuccessful visits to the Bernabeu. However, Guardiola acknowledged that the team had played better in some of those past encounters without securing a win. His gratitude towards the players for their perseverance and commitment was evident, as he reflected on the challenges faced in previous matches at the iconic venue.
Guardiola added: “We have to be so grateful to the players. I have been here many times in the last five years and we played better than today and didn’t win. This is the reality. The first 25 minutes until the goal from Nico they were better than us.”
As Manchester City continues to push for success on multiple fronts, Guardiola’s focus remains on refining the team’s performance to meet the high standards required for Champions League glory.
