Burnley
The enduring passion of Burnley FC fans is celebrated in a newly released book titled ‘Protests to Promotion,’ which showcases the work of photographer Clive Lawrence. Known for capturing the essence of football culture, Lawrence’s collection features 47 black and white photographs taken between 1989 and 1992, a period marking the club’s journey from crisis to revival. The book, published by Lower Block, serves as a gritty visual chronicle of Burnley FC’s transformation, focusing on the fervent supporters who have been the backbone of the club.
Clive Lawrence said: “What has surprised me is just how well the book has been received. The photos in the book concentrate mainly on the fans, the fashions of the time and the interactions around football games.”
Clive Lawrence added: “I’d seen and heard about Lower Block and I was surprised when they reached out and suggested we do a Zine on my Burnley images. It wasn’t a difficult decision for me to do this, as I knew the quality of work they have already produced and it was great to have a Burnley publication on their bookshelf.”
Clive Lawrence expressed his gratitude: “I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who has bought one and supported me with project.”
Lawrence, who began capturing these evocative images as a student at Nelson and Colne College, continued his work as the club photographer from 1990 to 1992. Now a successful freelance photographer, his images not only document the highs and lows of the Clarets on the pitch but also the vibrant culture and lifestyle surrounding the club. The book, priced at £8.50 plus postage, is available for purchase directly from the Lower Block website.
The release of ‘Protests to Promotion’ marks an important contribution to the documentation of football culture, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past for Burnley fans and football enthusiasts alike. The book has already garnered international attention, with sales extending to Milan, further highlighting the universal appeal of football and its dedicated fanbase
