Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed concerns over the club’s growing injury list ahead of their crucial Champions League clash against Club Brugge. The Gunners have been plagued by injuries this season, leading to speculation about the team’s training regimen. Arteta firmly denied allegations that his players are being “overtrained,” as Arsenal prepares to face the Belgian side.
Mikel Arteta said: “We were expecting him to be training with us by the end of December, but Gabi has been pushing every single day. He kept telling everybody I’m going to be earlier, earlier, earlier, and he has done it. So thanks to his work and all the work that the medical staff have done with him throughout these months and we had the possibility to make a swap there.”
Arteta continued: “No, because we don’t train. I mean, today we’ve done 20 minutes, so surely it’s not because we overtrained the players.”
He added: “The fact that you are missing players, you are loading other players more that’s a consequence to that. It’s a really dangerous circle that one, and on top of that we have some injuries that in terms of what happened in the past we are not having more injuries.”
Gabriel Jesus has been included in the Champions League squad after recovering from a long-term injury, replacing a youngster in the team. His return is timely, given Arsenal’s defensive struggles, highlighted by Arteta fielding his sixth different back four in a recent defeat to Aston Villa. Despite a significant summer investment, the Gunners have faced challenges in maintaining a consistent lineup due to injuries.
The injury list includes key players such as William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Cristhian Mosquera, along with Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Viktor Gyokeres, who have all spent time in the treatment room this season. Arteta emphasized the “snowball effect” of injuries, where the absence of some players increases the workload on others, potentially leading to further issues.
Despite these challenges, Arsenal remains a formidable force in the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup. Arteta’s squad is determined to compete for major trophies this season, and the manager is confident in his team’s ability to overcome these obstacles.
