Unai Emery
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery downplayed his team’s chances of challenging for the Premier League title following their thrilling victory over Arsenal. Despite securing a ninth consecutive home win and a ninth victory in their last ten league games, Emery maintained that it is premature to consider Aston Villa as genuine title contenders.
Unai Emery said: “I am not thinking in it. I know 38 matches is very difficult. We are not a contender. If we were in day 35, perhaps we can speak differently. Arsenal are the best team in the Premier League until now. We are really being consistent, and through it we achieve points. How we are now, I am so proud of how we are, taking the challenges we give them. The reality is that we have to face difficulties, and our target in 38 matches, we will see it. Now we feel good and strong in the position we are. We play against Basel on Thursday. I want to enjoy the way, each moment. Today we won and we are happy. We are going to rest now for two days. Be with family and friends.”
Aston Villa’s victory was sealed in dramatic fashion as Emi Buendia scored with the final kick of the game, sending Villa Park into celebrations. Matty Cash had initially given Villa the lead in the first half, but Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard equalized early in the second half. Buendia’s late winner ensured that Villa maintained their impressive home form.
Emery’s comments reflect a cautious approach, acknowledging the challenges of a long Premier League season. While Villa’s current form is commendable, Emery emphasized the importance of consistency and the need to navigate through the entire 38-match campaign before making any bold declarations about title ambitions. The manager also highlighted the upcoming Europa Conference League match against Basel, indicating a focus on maintaining momentum across all competitions.
The victory over Arsenal not only showcased Villa’s resilience but also highlighted the significant contributions of players like Buendia, who demonstrated composure under pressure. As Villa continues to build on their recent successes, Emery’s pragmatic outlook serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of the Premier League.
