Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Arsenal’s defensive line faces a significant challenge as Cristhian Mosquera is set to miss at least six weeks due to a fresh ankle injury. This development adds to the Gunners’ ongoing injury concerns, with Gabriel Magalhaes sidelined with a thigh problem and William Saliba nursing a knock. Mosquera, who joined Arsenal in the summer, has quickly become an integral part of the team, often stepping in for both Gabriel and Saliba. However, his absence will be felt as Arsenal prepares to face Aston Villa this weekend.
Mikel Arteta said: “There is the potential for Saliba to return against Villa, however, as his injury was just a ‘matter of days’ away from recovering fully. For what they’ve been doing, the way they’ve been playing and winning matches, certainly it’s a team that is in great form and we know that. We know obviously the manager and the incredible job he’s done there as well, so we know the task tomorrow, but we always take it as an opportunity.”
Arteta also mentioned: “I hope that we are in that position [with a fit squad] and then again, we can maintain and decide for the freshness of the team and what is required on that day, what is the best squad to take. A problem that obviously a lot of clubs in this country are very familiar with.”
Mosquera’s injury comes at a crucial time, as Arsenal sits at the top of the Premier League table, with former boss Unai Emery’s Aston Villa trailing in third place. The Gunners have been in excellent form, but the absence of key defenders could pose a challenge. Mosquera has been pivotal in filling defensive gaps, especially during the recent matches against Chelsea and Brentford. His injury occurred during the first half of the second tie, where he landed awkwardly while challenging for a header.
The upcoming festive fixture run, including a critical match against Liverpool in early January, will test Arsenal’s squad depth. With Mosquera potentially out for six weeks, Arsenal’s ability to maintain their league position amidst these challenges will be closely watched. Further tests will determine the full extent of Mosquera’s injury, but his absence will undoubtedly impact Arteta’s defensive strategies in the coming weeks.
