Newcastle United, led by manager Eddie Howe, are gearing up for a crucial visit to the Stadium of Light on Sunday, December 14. The match against Sunderland promises to be a significant challenge as the Black Cats have made a surprising impact in their first Premier League season since promotion from the Championship. In a recent encounter, Sunderland came close to upsetting the defending champions, Liverpool, with a goal from Chemsdine Talbi. However, Florian Wirtz’s equalizer and Federico Chiesa’s crucial goal-line clearance ensured Liverpool avoided defeat. Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, acknowledged Sunderland’s threat, a sentiment Newcastle will be keenly aware of.
Arne Slot said: “It is clear that teams who play us think they can get a result. In the second half there was only one team that had the ball, but if they had one free-kick they could bring it to our half with a long ball, that is a danger with them. They have shown they are a threat with set-pieces. The good thing is we didn’t concede from a set-piece.”
Slot added: “I was hoping for more but I knew how difficult it was. A deflection led to us going 1-0 down and in recent games we have found it really hard to get an equaliser, but we have had a bit of luck. The good thing is Fede could have thought it is nothing to do with me, but he kept sprinting and the draw was the minimum he deserved and we did.”
Liverpool’s recent draw against Sunderland highlighted the Black Cats’ ability to pose a significant threat, particularly through set-pieces. Despite dominating possession in the second half, Liverpool found themselves vulnerable to Sunderland’s long-ball tactics. Slot’s comments reflect a growing awareness of Sunderland’s strengths, which Newcastle will need to consider as they prepare for the upcoming fixture.
Newcastle’s schedule remains demanding, with a match against Burnley on Saturday followed by a trip to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen before the derby against Sunderland. Meanwhile, Sunderland will face Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday, providing another test of their Premier League credentials. As Newcastle strategizes for their encounter with Sunderland, they will undoubtedly heed the lessons from Liverpool’s experience and prepare for the Black Cats’ set-piece prowess.
