Nottingham Forest marked their return to European competition after nearly three decades with a commendable 2-2 draw against Real Betis in Seville. The two-time European Cup winners showcased their resilience and skill in their Europa League opener, setting a promising tone for their continental campaign.
Morgan Gibbs-White said: “Hopefully, that’s our goal… That’s definitely our goal and our motivation to try and do that. The fans were outstanding, so thank you to them for travelling such a long way. The boys were incredible and our main goal is, yeah, obviously to win it.”
Gibbs-White added: “Betis are a top, top team, they’ve got some really good players, so we always knew it was going to be difficult going into this game, especially being away from home. We know their fans are good and it’s our first time as a team playing in Europe, so I thought the boys were incredible. Especially in the first half we dominated the game. Like I said, we should have had four or five goals in the first half. But this game is cruel and it’s something we’ve got to get better as a team in managing the game out. We were great at that last season and we’ve got to try and add that into our game this season.”
Gibbs-White continued: “I think it’s clear to see what we’re trying to do on the pitch. I feel like the more chances we’re going to be able to take in the future, the better we’re going to leave ourselves.”
Ange Postecoglou, the newly appointed manager, brings experience and a recent Europa League triumph with Tottenham to the team. He is determined to instill a winning mentality in his players, emphasizing the importance of learning from their opening match. Despite not securing a win in his initial four matches, Postecoglou remains optimistic about the team’s potential.
The match against Real Betis saw Forest initially fall behind to a goal by Cedric Bakambu, but they quickly responded with Igor Jesus leveling the score. Jesus then put Forest ahead with a header, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess. However, a late goal by Antony, a former Manchester United player, ensured the match ended in a draw.
Nottingham Forest will continue their Europa League journey at home against FC Midtjylland next Thursday. The team is hopeful of securing their first victory under Postecoglou’s leadership, as they aim to build on the positive signs shown in their recent performances. With a home game against Sunderland on the horizon, the team is eager to translate their quality into winning results.
