Hugo Ekitike
Hugo Ekitike will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match against Crystal Palace following a suspension due to two yellow cards received during their recent Carabao Cup victory over Southampton. The 23-year-old forward, who has been in impressive form with five goals in eight appearances this season, was sent off in the 86th minute at Anfield. This incident has opened the door for Alexander Isak to potentially make his full Premier League debut for Liverpool.
Gary Lineker said: “I think the rules are daft, they are ludicrous. But they all know that is a yellow card and if you have already had a yellow card you are going to go. I thought Slot was quite right, if it’s a big Champions League game and if you have beaten three players and knocked it in the corner. I am all for tap-ins but I don’t think that was the moment to run off against a Championship side [and take his shirt off]. Also, when he said ‘call me old fashioned and this’, but you’ve got to think about this right: he is trying to keep Isak out of the side at the moment in terms of that centre forward position. He has now given Isak the opportunity to go and play in his position. Isak scores two or three goals and now he is struggling to get back in.”
Arne Slot said: “The first one (yellow card) was already needless and to a certain extent stupid because you have to control your emotions. I know how hard it is if you play in the Premier League and you are a number nine then the defender can almost do everything he wants, and when you push him a little bit you get a free-kick against you. But it is always the best to control your emotions, and if you can’t then do it in a way that doesn’t lead to a yellow card. So I think I said when I got my red card against Everton that’s always stupid because you can show your emotions. But if it leads to a yellow or red then it’s, to a certain extent, stupid. Then I told him that if you score in a Champions League final in the 87th minute after beating three players and hitting it in the top corner I can maybe understand you say: ‘It’s all about me’.”
The incident has sparked a debate about the rules surrounding player celebrations, with many feeling the regulations are overly strict. Ekitike’s actions have inadvertently provided Isak with a chance to shine in his absence. Isak, who recently scored his first goal for Liverpool, is expected to seize this opportunity to solidify his position in the team.
With Ekitike sidelined, Liverpool will rely on Isak to lead the attack against Crystal Palace. The situation presents a crucial moment for Isak to demonstrate his capabilities and potentially secure a more permanent role in the starting lineup. As the Premier League season progresses, Liverpool’s forward dynamics will be closely watched, especially with Ekitike eager to reclaim his spot upon his return.
