Nottingham Forest is poised to make its return to European football as they face Real Betis in their Europa League opener. Under the guidance of head coach Ange Postecoglou, the Reds are eager to mark their comeback on the continental stage after a three-decade absence.
Ange Postecoglou said: “It’s a significant moment for the club, and we are determined to make the most of this opportunity. Having previously won this tournament with Tottenham Hotspur, I am confident in our ability to compete at this level.”
The clash against Real Betis marks Forest’s first European competition since the 1995/96 season. Postecoglou, who recently took over the managerial role, is yet to secure his first victory with the team. Despite a challenging start with successive defeats, the team managed to draw 1-1 against Burnley in their latest domestic outing.
In preparation for the match in Seville, Postecoglou has made strategic changes to his lineup. The starting XI sees the inclusion of Ibrahim Sangare, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Igor Jesus, replacing Chris Wood, Dilane Bakwa, and Dan Ndoye. The team is expected to adopt a 4-3-3 formation, with Neco Williams, Morato, Nikola Milenkovic, and Oleksandr Zinchenko forming the defensive line ahead of goalkeeper Matz Sels. The midfield will feature Douglas Luiz, Elliot Anderson, and Ibrahim Sangare, while Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi will support frontman Jesus.
Postecoglou has opted not to risk center-back Murillo, who missed the previous game due to an injury sustained against Arsenal. Murillo did not travel with the squad to Spain, as the manager prioritizes his recovery.
The substitutes’ bench includes Nicolas Dominguez, who returns from injury, alongside John Victor, Wood, Ndoye, Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, James McAtee, Bakwa, Willy Boly, and Nicolo Savona.
The match against Real Betis is not just a test of Forest’s capabilities but also a chance to establish themselves once again on the European stage. Fans can catch the action live on TNT Sports, as the team aims to kick off their Europa League campaign with a strong performance.
