Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola took an active role in guiding midfielder Nico Gonzalez during their 2-0 victory over Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup. Gonzalez, who started his first match since City’s defeat to Tottenham, was the focal point of Guardiola’s tactical instructions throughout the game. The manager’s hands-on approach highlighted his commitment to developing the young midfielder’s potential.
Pep Guardiola said: “Nico’s a guy who listens a lot and wants to improve and asks me what to do in different circumstances. When you are on the pitch, it’s better because you are there and can explain better. Nico is a young lad and he is incredibly coachable. When players want to be coachable, it’s a gift for all the managers. There were others who it is more difficult to tell them. These guys must be helped until the end and he has to realise especially in the second half as much as we were able to contact with him and make control forward and break the lines, every time was a chance. Three times in the second half we broke the lines with Phil [Foden], Rico [Lewis] and a winger arrived it was a chance. He has to use more and more. He has this potential to do it. In the next games, in his process he will get it.”
Gonzalez, a £50 million signing from Porto, has been stepping up in Rodri’s absence due to injury. Despite not being a direct replacement, Gonzalez has adapted to a role that has seen him become an integral part of Guardiola’s plans over the past nine months. His performance against Huddersfield was marked by moments that pleased Guardiola, yet the manager was keen to emphasize areas for improvement.
Kalvin Phillips made a notable return to action, marking his first appearance in nearly two years, while Mateo Kovacic resumed training after recovering from an Achilles injury. Despite these developments, Gonzalez remains a key figure in City’s midfield setup, particularly as they prepare for upcoming fixtures against Burnley, Monaco, and Brentford.
Guardiola’s focus on Gonzalez underscores the manager’s long-term vision for nurturing talent within the squad. By providing real-time feedback and tactical insights, Guardiola aims to elevate Gonzalez’s game, ensuring he maximizes his potential and contributes significantly to City’s ambitions this season.
