Pep Guardiola has offered insights into why Kalvin Phillips has faced difficulties adapting to life at Manchester City. The midfielder, who thrived under Marcelo Bielsa’s high-energy and quick-pressing system at Leeds United, has found the transition to City’s possession-based style challenging since his £42 million move in 2022. Phillips has managed just 16 Premier League appearances, with only two starts, highlighting his struggle to find a consistent role in the team.
Pep Guardiola said: “Maybe I didn’t give him enough minutes, I don’t know. In that moment Rodri was fit, like our father, protective of the other 10 sons. And maybe the lack of minutes, maybe the way we played – completely different from Leeds with Marcelo [Bielsa]. Always I feel attached and understandable completely with players, what they feel because always I believe in that level, all players are really, really good.”
“It’s just the environment, how they connect with the way we play, especially with other mates. And players play good when they have minutes, games, games, games and I didn’t give them. And when that’s happened I feel bad.”
Phillips’ journey at Manchester City has been marked by limited playing time and loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town, which failed to revive his top-flight career. Despite being included in Guardiola’s 25-man Premier League squad, Phillips’ last league appearance for City dates back to April 2023. Initially, there were speculations of a summer move, with Leeds United frequently mentioned as a potential destination. However, such a transfer was deemed unlikely due to his substantial weekly wages and injury concerns, including Achilles surgery earlier in the summer.
Phillips’ representatives were reportedly pushing for an exit as his prominence in the football world diminished. Many believe his skills were best suited to Bielsa’s system at Leeds, and his performance under Gareth Southgate for England during Euro 2020 further emphasized his potential in a different setup.
Guardiola has previously expressed regret over Phillips’ situation at City, acknowledging his professional conduct throughout. Notably, the manager apologized for comments made about Phillips’ weight upon his return from the 2022 World Cup. Despite being poised for a return in the League Cup against Huddersfield Town, Phillips is set to miss the match due to the birth of his second child, leaving him yet to feature in a matchday squad this season.
