Alejandro Garnacho
Alejandro Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Manchester United during the summer transfer window, has been carefully managed by Enzo Maresca due to his lack of a proper pre-season. The Argentine winger recently made his first start for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round against Lincoln, having previously played just 33 minutes for the Blues. Despite a challenging start, Chelsea turned the game around with goals from Facundo Buonanotte and Tyrique George, securing their place in the next round.
Enzo Maresca said: “Absolutely, absolutely [laughs]. No, because we prepared the game thinking exactly in the way it was the first-half, and sometimes it’s not about desire, it’s about winning second ball, but it’s also about experience. Jamie Gittens never played against League One [teams], these kind of games. Jorrel never played this kind of game. This kind of game, you have to play in a different way, you have to play in a different way. It’s more about desire, and we struggled in the first half.”
Garnacho was substituted just before the hour mark, a decision that might increase his chances of starting in the upcoming Premier League match against Brighton. With Cole Palmer nursing a groin injury and Buonanotte ineligible to face his parent club, Garnacho’s playing time is expected to increase. The 21-year-old recently took to Instagram to express his delight following the victory over Lincoln, sharing a photo of himself applauding the away supporters and stating, “Happy to be in the next round. Can’t wait to see you at home on Saturday.”
Looking ahead, Garnacho is set to receive ample opportunities to showcase his talent as Chelsea competes across four competitions. The Blues’ next Champions League fixture is against Benfica, followed by a Premier League clash with Liverpool, marking the end of a series of home games before the October international break. As Garnacho continues to integrate into the team, his contributions will be crucial in Chelsea’s quest for success this season.
