Sunderland AFC is grappling with a significant setback as record signing Habib Diarra is expected to be sidelined until December due to a groin injury. The midfielder’s absence comes at a crucial time for the club, as they navigate their Premier League campaign and prepare for Diarra’s potential participation in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Senegal.
Regis Le Bris said: “We are in desperate need of a medium-to-long term solution. While Diarra rehabilitates from the surgery he underwent earlier this week, we will be looking at our squad and trying to decide the best way of proceeding over the coming weeks and months.”
The timing of Diarra’s injury could not be worse for Sunderland, as his absence might extend through ten crucial matches, depending on Senegal’s progress in the AFCON. This situation leaves head coach Regis Le Bris with the challenge of finding a suitable replacement to fill the void left by the talented midfielder.
In the immediate term, Le Bris has several options to consider. Chris Rigg, a promising young talent, was given a chance against Aston Villa, allowing Enzo Le Fée to shift to the left, a position where he has excelled. Rigg’s performance prior to his early substitution was promising, suggesting he could be a viable option moving forward.
Enzo Le Fée, who has predominantly played on the left, might be moved to his preferred number 10 role. This switch could see Simon Adingra reintroduced on the flank, offering Le Bris tactical flexibility. Additionally, Dan Neil, who made his Premier League debut recently, could be integrated into the midfield, potentially alongside Noah Sadiki, depending on the team’s shape and strategy.
Another intriguing option for Le Bris is Lutsharel Geertruida. Although primarily a defender, Geertruida has demonstrated versatility by making substitute appearances as a midfield enforcer. His inclusion could provide a more cautious approach in certain matches, with the possibility of deploying Granit Xhaka in a more advanced role, although this is not the preferred strategy given Xhaka’s strong performances in a deeper position.
Sunderland’s tactical adaptability was on display against Aston Villa when Le Bris opted for a three-at-the-back formation, utilizing Nordi Mukiele, Omar Alderete, and Dan Ballard in defense. While this setup is not the norm for Le Bris, it remains a strategic option that could be employed when necessary.
As Sunderland navigates this challenging period, the club’s ability to adapt and find effective solutions will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge in the Premier League.
