ange Postecoglou
Nottingham Forest is set to embark on a new chapter in European football as they prepare for their Europa League campaign under the guidance of newly appointed manager Ange Postecoglou. The club, which has a storied history in European competitions, has not tasted continental action since their last appearance three decades ago. This long-awaited return comes amidst a period of transition and adaptation under Postecoglou, who took over from Nuno Espirito Santo.
Mark Crossley said: “It is making me feel old you just saying that. You wouldn’t have believed it would take that long, but you wouldn’t have thought we’d be out of the Premier League for 20-odd years either.”
Crossley added: “Imagine a big lad from Barnsley trying to keep them out these days. We got an OK result over there then they came back to the City Ground and we battered them in the first half and I made a big mistake from Ziege’s free kick. We were well on top, we just couldn’t score.”
Crossley continued: “I needed things like that when I was playing, I needed to be doubted, to get the best out of me. When we went through against Auxerre, I have one regret that I never kept that newspaper and slid it under the dressing room door at the end.”
Crossley concluded: “I watched the game against Burnley and I thought there were signs. The thing is, it’ll be difficult to install a different style of football immediately. There’s no doubt about that.”
Forest’s European pedigree is both a source of pride and a burden. The club’s past glories, including their famous nights against European giants, have set a high benchmark. Crossley, a Forest legend, reminisced about the challenges and triumphs of playing in Europe, highlighting the club’s resilience and determination. The current squad, under Postecoglou’s leadership, faces the daunting task of living up to those expectations while forging their own path.
Postecoglou’s tenure has begun with mixed results, and the transition to his style of play is still underway. The manager’s previous success with Tottenham Hotspur, where he led the team to a notable victory, has set high expectations. However, the early stages of his Forest career have been challenging, with the team yet to find consistent form.
The Europa League presents an opportunity for Forest to showcase their potential on the European stage. With a mix of experienced players and newcomers, the squad will need to adapt quickly to the demands of continental competition. The City Ground, known for its intimidating atmosphere, will play a crucial role in Forest’s campaign, providing the team with the support needed to overcome formidable opponents.
As Forest prepares for their Europa League journey, fans and players alike are filled with anticipation and hope. The club’s rich history serves as both inspiration and motivation, as they aim to make a mark in European football once again.
