Ralf Rangnick
Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is reportedly undergoing treatment for an infection acquired during a hospital stay following surgery on his right ankle. The German media has described his condition as serious, resulting in an extended hospital stay. Despite these challenges, Rangnick is expected to continue his role as Austria’s manager for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in October.
Ralf Rangnick said: “hospital-acquired germ” which has to be “treated with further measures.”
According to reports from German outlet BILD, Rangnick underwent surgery at a trauma clinic in Murnau, Bavaria. The infection, described as a “hospital-acquired germ,” necessitates additional medical intervention. While Rangnick is anticipated to be well enough to manage Austria during the international break, he will not be present at the squad announcement for their matches against San Marino and Romania on October 9 and October 12. Instead, his assistant manager, Lars Kornetka, will handle the squad announcement duties.
Rangnick’s health issues have impacted his mobility, leading him to cycle between the dressing room and the bench during Austria’s recent match against Bosnia. His tenure at Manchester United concluded with the 2021-22 season, where he initially planned to transition into a consultancy role. However, the club later announced that he would not assume this position. Subsequently, Rangnick was appointed as the manager of the Austrian national team.
Austria’s performance at Euro 2024 saw them as one of the standout teams during the group stages, although their journey ended unexpectedly in the round of 16 against Turkey. Rangnick has been vocal about his experiences at Manchester United, often reflecting on the club’s leadership dynamics since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013. He has highlighted the challenges in decision-making processes during his six-month stint as interim manager, emphasizing the difficulties in identifying key decision-makers within the club.
Rangnick’s health setback comes at a crucial time for Austria as they prepare for their World Cup qualifying matches. His ability to manage the team effectively despite these challenges will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
