Diego Gomez
Brighton & Hove Albion showcased a dominant display against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, securing a resounding 6-0 victory. The star of the match was undoubtedly Paraguay international Diego Gomez, who netted four goals, including two spectacular long-range strikes that even garnered applause from some Barnsley supporters. Gomez’s final goal was a composed finish in a one-on-one situation, capping off a remarkable individual performance.
Fabian Hurzeler said: “Yesterday we had a finishing drill and they scored some nice goals. We joked that we always have to do this now with him before a game. I am very pleased with him because he always tries hard in every training session to improve, especially his skill. We always knew that he has an unable shot if he gets a chance to score. He played a little bit different position today so we are really happy for him because he is a guy who is working hard. You just feel the passion from him for this football game and we are really pleased with him.”
Hurzeler said: “I think we didn’t have a perfect start in the game. Barnsley started well. We didn’t have control of the game because we didn’t have the structure, the right positioning. I think the (first) goal helped us and then after it was getting better and better by each goal. Overall, we were pleased we had Diego in unbelievable shape with some unbelievable goals. These goals helped us get better and better into the game and then, especially in the second half, the boys controlled it really well. They had good structure, they created chances, they scored goals, they were good in rest defence. I think there were not too many chances for Barnsley so it was a step forward when we look back at the first cup game against Oxford, where we gave away a lot of chances.”
In the aftermath of the match, head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed his satisfaction with Gomez’s performance and the team’s overall improvement. Hurzeler noted that despite a shaky start, Brighton gradually gained control, thanks in large part to Gomez’s exceptional form. The coach emphasized the importance of structure and positioning, which allowed the team to create numerous chances and maintain a solid defensive stance.
Brighton’s victory over Barnsley mirrored their previous 6-0 triumph against Oxford United in the second round, showcasing their offensive prowess and defensive solidity. The team’s ability to adapt and improve their game plan was evident, marking a significant step forward as they advance in the competition.
