Arne Slot Manager
Liverpool is gearing up for their Premier League clash against Southampton, with manager Arne Slot considering a reshuffle of his squad. Having started the season positively, Slot is keen to maintain the momentum but acknowledges the need to provide game time to some of the fringe players. This strategy could see the likes of Wataru Endo, Giorgi Mamardashvilli, and Federico Chiesa take to the field against the Saints.
Arne Slot said: “These are the players that need a game and we’re happy that we have one. If we wouldn’t have had one, we probably would have arranged a friendly in this week for these players because they need to play games as well to keep them ready whenever we need them. We’ve used quite a lot in the last three games because we thought we needed to keep this energy throughout all the three games – but not all of them. And the few we haven’t used, it’s definitely the perfect moment for them to get playing time.”
Speaking about any more potential changes he could make, the Liverpool boss added: “Yeah, we do [make changes]. Same as we did last season in the League Cup. So many games need to be played and our players are able to do so, but once in a while they need a bit of rest as well because we sometimes tend to forget because we are so focused – and I’m the first one – on our games at Liverpool but many of them have played twice for the national teams as well.”
“So, they are able to do a lot but once in a while they need a little bit of rest – and I’m talking about two days of rest, which is still not a lot.”
Slot’s comments highlight the balancing act required in managing a squad through a busy schedule. Liverpool’s depth will be tested as they aim to keep key players fresh, especially with many having recently returned from international duty. The inclusion of fringe players not only provides them with vital match experience but also ensures that the squad remains competitive and energetic throughout the season. This approach has been a hallmark of Slot’s management style, emphasizing squad rotation and player readiness.
Liverpool’s full squad for the Southampton match includes goalkeepers Alisson, Mamardashvilli, Woodman, and Pecsi. The defenders list features Van Dijk, Gomez, Konate, Kerkez, Bradley, Leoni, Robertson, Frimpong, Williams, and Ramsay. In midfield, Endo, Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones, Gravenberch, Nyoni, and Bajcetic are in contention. The forwards include Salah, Chiesa, Isak, Gakpo, Ekitike, and Ngumoha.
As Liverpool prepares for this fixture, the focus will be on maintaining their strong form while integrating players who have not seen much action. This strategy not only strengthens the squad but also prepares them for the challenges ahead in the Premier League.
