Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has voiced his concerns regarding Liverpool’s formidable start to the Premier League season. With the Reds maintaining a perfect record and holding a seven-point lead over Chelsea after just five matches, Maresca conceded that catching Liverpool might be an insurmountable task for the Blues and other clubs.
Enzo Maresca said: “If they continue in this way I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs. They have been doing a fantastic job since last year, and the players they have decided to buy shows the intention of the club to go again for the Premier League and the Champions League, and that is quite clear.”
Liverpool’s impressive run includes dramatic late victories against Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Burnley, as well as a notable win against Arsenal. Their victory in the Merseyside derby further solidified their flawless start, positioning them as strong contenders for back-to-back league titles—a feat not achieved by the club in over three decades.
Chelsea, on the other hand, faced their first major setback with a loss to Manchester United, marking their initial defeat in the league this season. Despite returning to the Champions League last term and investing heavily in the summer, Chelsea’s ambitions to close the gap at the top of the table have been challenged by Liverpool’s early dominance.
Maresca, who led Chelsea to the Europa Conference League title last season, is now focused on avoiding a potential upset in the Carabao Cup against League One side Huddersfield.
He said: “Personally, I would prefer to play against a Premier League team rather than a League One team because these are the kind of games that worry me most because you can underestimate the opposition. It is something we need to avoid, do our job and then focus on the Premier League [against Brighton] on Saturday.”
Chelsea’s last league title came in 2017 under Antonio Conte, and while they have shown promise, the challenge posed by Liverpool’s current form is significant. The Blues will need to maintain focus and consistency if they are to remain competitive in the title race and other competitions this season.
