Yves Bissouma
Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank has addressed the situation surrounding midfielder Yves Bissouma, who has faced disciplinary challenges and injury setbacks. Despite these issues, Frank conveyed his support for Bissouma, emphasizing that the player still has a future at the club. Spurs are set to face Brighton, aiming to continue their impressive start to the season, which includes four wins in five matches and a solid defensive record.
Thomas Frank said: “There are no hard feelings at all. Not before, not now, not at all. Train well and everyone has an opportunity. He has just started to run outside, so he is not part of the group but everything I’ve seen when I’ve said hello to him and every day with the players, he seems good.”
Bissouma, who joined Tottenham from Brighton for £25 million in 2022, has struggled to find consistent form due to disciplinary issues, including a suspension following a social media incident last summer. A knee injury further complicated his situation, hindering a potential move and leaving Tottenham with concerns over his contract. However, Frank remains hopeful that Bissouma will reintegrate into the squad once he regains fitness.
The Spurs manager also highlighted the rise of 19-year-old Lucas Bergvall, who has been making significant strides in the team. Frank noted Bergvall’s energy and potential, which have been pivotal in recent matches, including his contributions against West Ham and Villarreal.
Thomas Frank said: “The coaches and I have been working with him on a couple of things. He’s got so much energy that sometimes you need to say, pause, stop, don’t run when we have the ball and find the higher, more dangerous positions. For example, the deep run where he scored against West Ham was a big thing.”
As Tottenham continue to build upon their defensive solidity, Frank is keen to enhance the team’s attacking capabilities. The manager stressed the importance of playing offensively and bravely, aligning with the club’s ethos of scoring goals and maintaining a strong defensive foundation.
Thomas Frank said: “I think it’s extremely important that we are brave and we are offensive and we play forward. I think that’s crucial. Over the years all the teams I’ve been part of, we’ve scored a lot of goals and I’m convinced we will continue that way because that’s the way Tottenham should play and will play.”
Frank acknowledged that developing a free-scoring team takes time, but he remains optimistic about the progress made so far. He praised the team’s performance in the second half against Burnley and the approach taken against West Ham, highlighting the promising signs in their offensive play.
One player who could bolster Tottenham’s attacking options is Brennan Johnson, last season’s top scorer. Frank expressed confidence in Johnson’s versatility and goal-scoring ability, noting his effectiveness on both flanks.
Thomas Frank said: “I think Brennan is a very good player. He can play both sides. I agree he played mostly on the right [last season], but I definitely think he can play on the left. He played on the left in two games and scored two goals so that is a decent output.”
As Tottenham prepare for their upcoming fixtures, Frank’s focus remains on fostering a balanced and dynamic team capable of achieving success on multiple fronts.
