Sunderland is set to return to Premier League action as they prepare to face Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light this Sunday. Head coach Régis Le Bris has indicated that Dan Neil is on the brink of making his Premier League debut, despite the recent decision to field Lutsharel Geertruida in midfield. Neil, who has yet to feature in the league this season, was initially considered for a role at Selhurst Park, but Le Bris opted for the RB Leipzig loanee for defensive reasons. Meanwhile, the team is bolstered by the full fitness of Sadiki ahead of the weekend’s match.
c said: “Noah early in the game struggled with his knee. I think at that moment the decision we wanted to make was Dan at that minute. But later in the game for the final fight, they went direct so I think the more defensive profile was probably the best solution, which was Geertruida.”
Le Bris has expressed his admiration for Neil’s dedication and believes that opportunities for the young player are on the horizon. However, Sunderland will face a challenge in December as they are set to lose Sadiki and Habib Diarra for at least two weeks due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Régis Le Bris said: “I think he trains really well. Until you play you don’t know. For me, I’m always positive because I’ve worked with young players all my life. They can surprise us. If the foundations are good and they’re talented and work hard, they just need opportunities. In this position, he has the best just in front of him, which is positive for him and the squad, he just has to wait a bit. We need the full squad.”
In addition to Neil’s potential debut, Le Bris provided updates on recent signings Brian Brobbey and Bertrand Traoré. Both players, acquired on deadline day, are expected to serve as impact substitutes as they continue to integrate with the squad.
Régis Le Bris said: “They’ve had one more week with the squad now. It was important to train with the team to get to know everyone and our playing principles. So one more week will be useful for them and for us. After that, it’s a question of scenario and question of strength we’ll need across this game. We won’t know before.”
As Sunderland prepares for their encounter with Aston Villa, the focus remains on strategic squad utilization and player readiness. Le Bris’s insights highlight the team’s adaptability and the potential for young talents like Dan Neil to make their mark in the Premier League.
