Gianluigi Donnarumma
Manchester City have successfully signed Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of approximately £26 million. The move comes as part of a strategic reshuffle at the Etihad Stadium, with Donnarumma stepping in to replace Ederson, who has transferred to Fenerbahce. Donnarumma expressed his eagerness to join City, highlighting the club’s strong interest in him and the sense of pride he felt from their pursuit.
Gianluigi Donnarumma said: “That was my only option, the only thing I wanted. so I am happy to be here at City and be part of this fantastic team. Before the summer I knew that City were very interested in me, the relationship strengthened after the Club World Cup. I knew the coach was pushing for my arrival here, everyone wanted me here, it gave me such pride to see such a demonstration of affection.”
Donnarumma’s arrival at Manchester City marks a significant addition to the squad, following his successful stint at PSG where he won four Ligue 1 titles and played a crucial role in securing their first Champions League title. His move to the Premier League has been met with enthusiasm, as he has already made a strong impression by keeping a clean sheet in his debut match, a 3-0 victory against Manchester United.
Paul Scholes said: “I don’t think the quality is there [in the side]. Did they really need to get to the Grimsby game to realise [André] Onana is not good enough? If Manchester United were not in the market for Gianluigi Donnarumma when he became available, that is [a] criminal offence. The recruitment side went to buy forwards. That did need addressing, but did it need three of them? I’m not sure it did.”
The transfer has sparked discussions, particularly from Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, who criticized United’s recruitment strategy for not pursuing Donnarumma. Scholes highlighted the ongoing goalkeeping challenges at United and questioned the club’s decision to prioritize forward signings over strengthening their defensive options.
Donnarumma also shared his excitement for the upcoming match against Napoli, a club he holds dear due to personal ties. Despite the distance, he remains hopeful for his family’s support during the match.
Gianluigi Donnarumma continued: “I am very tied to Napoli. I have so many friends and my family who live there. I am every excited about Thursday’s match. I would be a bit more excited if it were in Napoli. My mum is having a few issues but I am hoping she is going to be on my side.”
As Donnarumma settles into life at Manchester City, his presence is expected to bolster the team’s defensive strength, offering a promising outlook for the club’s ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.
