Mikel Arteta Arsenal
Jamie Carragher has expressed his views on Arsenal’s player sales strategy, asserting that the club lags behind Liverpool and Chelsea in this aspect. Despite Arsenal’s significant spending spree of over £250 million this summer, which included high-profile signings such as Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard, Carragher believes the club’s inability to generate substantial revenue from player sales is a concern. Arsenal’s net spend was the highest in the Premier League, with the club making less than £10 million from sales, including permanent transfers of Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos. The Gunners’ record sale remains the £35 million Liverpool paid for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017.
Jamie Carragher said: “I think a couple of years ago we would say, ‘Arsenal still need to win something under Mikel Arteta’, now we’re fully at that stage. But for me, I don’t even think it’s the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup. That would be nice but when you look at Arsenal’s team and squad, it’s what you expect to see at Real Madrid or PSG. Arsenal have to go really, really close this season. In terms of Mikel Arteta, you have to look at the spending. I know Liverpool have spent a lot more this summer, no doubt. But in terms of a club, Arsenal don’t sell well, they don’t sell any players. Liverpool and Chelsea do, they bring a lot of money in to give them the chance to spend big. He has to pay them back now.”
Arsenal’s recent 2-0 victory against Athletic Club marked a promising start to their Champions League campaign. However, Carragher’s comments highlight the pressure on Mikel Arteta to deliver significant success this season, given the club’s substantial financial investment. The match in Bilbao was not without its challenges, as Arsenal struggled to break the deadlock until the second half, with substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard making the difference.
Mikel Arteta said: “What an amazing place to play football. I must say, one of the greatest atmospheres that I’ve been in. We knew that the first 20-25 minutes it was going to be really tough, especially the way they played, it was so intense; a lot of direct players, a lot of duels. I think after that we started to grow throughout the game, and in the second half we were much more fluent, dominant, and looked much more of a threat.”
Carragher’s analysis underscores the expectation for Arsenal to compete at the highest level, akin to European giants like Real Madrid and PSG. The club’s spending habits, coupled with their lack of lucrative player sales, place a significant onus on Arteta to secure a major trophy this season. As the campaign progresses, the Gunners will need to demonstrate their capability to challenge for top honors, justifying the substantial investment made in the squad.
