Liverpool secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, thanks to a last-minute penalty from Mohamed Salah. The win marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive triumph of the season, propelling them back to the top of the Premier League table. The decisive penalty was awarded by referee Michael Oliver following a handball by former Manchester United player Hannibal Mejbri, sealing the victory in the dying moments of stoppage time.
Linda Pizzuti said: “Another dramatic, heart-racing, extra-time finish for Liverpool. Another 3 points, another clean sheet- holding on at the top of the table, four matches in. My goodness- still recovering.”
Arne Slot said: “I know how hard it is to create chances against a team with 11 players in the 18-yard box. It’s very good that they do this, as they almost got a point, I’m not saying anything negative about them, I’m just explaining how difficult it is against a Premier League team who defends with everyone back and doesn’t bring the ball out. If we don’t score from a set-piece the only thing you can do is score from open play which is quite difficult if you have to play 11 players in their 18-yard box. There were no really open chances. A draw was probably what we expected throughout the game. But we tried with the substitutions we made to bring on to the pitch all the players we have who can attack, we had six or seven on in the end. I don’t know if that has anything to do with scoring the goal but we did create the penalty and just before a big chance from Jeremie [Frimpong]. So relief, lucky.”
The match was a tense affair, with Burnley setting up a defensive wall that Liverpool struggled to break down. Despite dominating possession, Liverpool found it challenging to create clear-cut opportunities, as Burnley committed all players to defensive duties. The breakthrough came only after a series of strategic substitutions aimed at increasing Liverpool’s attacking threat. Jeremie Frimpong’s near miss preceded the pivotal handball incident that led to Salah’s match-winning penalty.
This victory not only extended Liverpool’s perfect start to the season but also highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to secure crucial points in difficult circumstances. The result left Liverpool fans and stakeholders, including Linda Pizzuti, celebrating yet another hard-fought win that keeps them at the summit of the Premier League standings.
