Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho, renowned as ‘The Special One’, faced an unexpected end to his managerial role at Fenerbahce after just one year. The Turkish club, under his leadership, failed to clinch the league title, falling behind their fierce rivals, Galatasaray. This continued their title drought, which has persisted since 2014. Mourinho’s stint saw no trophies, and an early setback this season came with their failure to qualify for the Champions League, narrowly losing to Benfica in a 1-0 aggregate defeat. Despite starting the season with four points from two games, Mourinho’s strategic approach ultimately led to his dismissal.
Ali Koc said: “Why did we fire Mourinho? I’ll say it for the first time, it was a painful dismissal. Parting ways with someone who is above all a friend was tough. Being eliminated by Benfica wasn’t a problem, but the way we were eliminated was unacceptable. This made me feel like last year’s football would continue. We parted ways because we believed this squad would be playing better football at this point. We knew our coach would put emphasis on defence when we brought him in, but we talked about the need to play more dominantly at the end of the season. Scoring 99 goals and getting 99 points [as Fenerbahce had done in the Superlig in the 2023-24 season] is our genetic code.”
Despite finishing 11 points behind Galatasaray and being knocked out of the Europa League by Rangers, Koc expressed that hiring Mourinho was initially seen as a success, citing good chemistry and certain achievements. However, the need for a more dominant playing style became apparent, leading to the decision to part ways. Koc also revealed that the club is considering another foreign coach with European experience, although their first choice, former Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti, declined the offer to work this season.
The club’s decision reflects a strategic shift towards a more aggressive and dominant style of play, aligning with their historical performance benchmarks. As Fenerbahce looks forward, the focus remains on finding a manager who can harness the potential of their squad and guide them back to league glory.
