Marcus Rashford Manchester United
Unai Emery provided Marcus Rashford with a crucial opportunity to regain his form and confidence by deploying him as a central striker at Aston Villa. Initially interested in a move to Barcelona, Rashford ultimately opted for a loan switch from Manchester United to Villa until the end of the season. This decision allowed him to play predominantly as a striker under Emery, a tactical shift considering his usual position off the left at Old Trafford.
Thomas Tuchel said: “He’s clearly a left winger. He had the freedom today to drift inside. He had an excellent training week, and it was obvious we wanted him to start because he trained so, so well on the left side.”
Unai Emery said: “We needed Jhon Duran, and he helped us get a lot of points at that moment – against West Ham, Leicester [early season] – and with Rashford, it is something similar. We need both players – Rashford and Watkins. The next step, if I have time, is to play them together. They did it once, with Rashford on the left side. But now we’re choosing both players to play as strikers. That is the next step I want to take. He is fitting into the system and the plan we have for him. Today, we opted to use him as a striker to maximise his qualities and boost his confidence. Today was a clear step forward. When he first arrived, he wasn’t training consistently and didn’t feel fully fit. But with more game time and his involvement with the national team, he’s regaining sharpness. Today confirmed his progress with us.”
Rashford’s role at Villa has been central to his resurgence, with Emery’s tactical decision to play him through the middle proving effective. This approach contrasts with Tuchel’s preference to use Rashford on the left for the national team, where he has been recalled and started in matches against Albania and Latvia. Despite missing the June internationals due to injury, Rashford was selected for the World Cup qualifiers, starting against Andorra in a wide role.
Rashford’s recent performances, including scoring twice against Preston and starting ahead of Watkins in Champions League quarter-final legs against Paris Saint-Germain, have further fueled the debate on his best position. Emery’s strategy to maximize Rashford’s qualities by playing him as a striker has shown promising results, while Tuchel remains confident in Rashford’s potential on the left flank for England.
