Régis Le Bris
Sunderland’s head coach, Regis Le Bris, received a significant boost as several key players returned to training this week. Luke O’Nien, who has been absent from international duty, trained with his teammates, signaling his readiness for upcoming matches. Aji Alese also made strides towards recovery, having missed pre-season due to injury. However, despite expectations, Dennis Cirkin and Leo Hjelde have yet to be seen in training since the international break. Another decision awaits Le Bris regarding Bertrand Traoré, Sunderland’s third deadline-day acquisition, whose integration with the squad will be limited before next Saturday’s game.
Kristjaan Speakman said: “Bertrand’s availability came fairly late in the window. In our planning, we had some key positions to make sure we got sorted out first. Luckily, we were able to do that within the timeframe. It was really tight with it being the end of the window – there was literally minutes to spare, really. But we feel he’s a really important part of the group moving forward. Letting Patrick go – a wide right, left footer – we felt we needed to replace that type of profile. He’s got experience at the top level, so we felt it was a good one for us to move on considering the quality of the player and the type of deal it was.”
The return of O’Nien and Alese to training is a positive development for Sunderland, as both players are crucial to the team’s defensive setup. Their presence will provide Le Bris with more options as he prepares for upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, the absence of Cirkin and Hjelde in training remains a concern, and the club will be keen to see them back on the pitch soon.
Bertrand Traoré’s late arrival in the transfer window adds another layer of complexity to the team’s preparations. With limited time to integrate with his new teammates, Traoré’s immediate impact might be constrained. However, his experience and skill set are expected to bolster Sunderland’s attacking options in the long run.
As Sunderland gears up for their next match, the focus will be on optimizing the squad’s fitness and cohesion, ensuring that key players are ready to contribute effectively.
