Yankuba Minteh
Yankuba Minteh delivered a standout performance in Gambia’s 3-1 victory over Kenya in a World Cup qualifier, showcasing his skills with a goal and an assist. Despite Gambia’s dominant first-half display, the team faced a late push from Kenya, which saw them concede a goal. This prompted head coach Johnathan McKinstry to substitute Minteh as the match neared its conclusion.
Johnathan McKinstry said: “We were waiting to make that substitution on the side to swap out the winger. Yankuba was fatiguing a little bit.”
Despite the win, Gambia’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup finals in North America and Mexico next summer remain slim. Nevertheless, Minteh’s performance was a bright spot, continuing his impressive form for both club and country this season. His commitment to defensive duties, alongside his attacking prowess, was highlighted in his post-match comments, which would have pleased his club manager, Fabian Hurzeler.
Minteh told Sports Eye Media: “I think the defensive side was working really hard. Kenya has a very strong team. If you want to win the game, you must defend, it is not only attacking.”
Minteh’s acknowledgment of the importance of defensive work underscores his growing maturity as a player. His ability to contribute both offensively and defensively is a testament to his development and adaptability, traits that are likely to benefit Brighton as the Premier League season progresses. With his recent performances, Minteh continues to establish himself as a valuable asset for both his national team and Brighton.
