Tommy Heron, a former Manchester United player, was honored with a special day at Old Trafford, reflecting on his enduring connection with the club. At 89, Heron was given the five-star treatment, which included meeting United’s new signing, Benjamin Sesko. Heron, originally from Irvine in Scotland, joined Manchester United in 1958 and was part of the squad until 1961, making three senior appearances as a left-back shortly after the Munich Air Disaster. He later moved to York City, where he played 192 times, and also had stints with Altrincham, Hyde United, and Droylsden before retiring in 1970.
Tommy Heron said: “Sesko’s a lovely lad. I think he’ll bring something exciting to United this season. When the announcer said my name and the crowd stood up and cheered, I couldn’t believe it. There were tears in my eyes and to see all those fans clapping for me – well, I’ll never forget it.”
Rachel, a care home staff member, said: “I cannot convey how kind and wonderful a man Tommy is, and helping to fulfil his dream makes caring for people so special. To work so hard to ensure he can experience his dream, to take Tommy on her day off and to care with such kindness takes a really special kind of person. Rachel is first and foremost an entirely selfless individual, everything she does is for Tommy and the residents with her care and ability to go above and beyond helping them to live their best lives.”
The event was organized in collaboration between Manchester United and the care teams at HC-One’s Averill House Care Home, where Heron currently resides. The care home provides residential dementia and nursing dementia care in Newton Heath, Manchester. The day was designed to celebrate Heron’s lifelong connection with the club he cherished.
Benjamin Sesko, the new striker for Manchester United, left a lasting impression on Heron, who expressed excitement about Sesko’s potential impact on the team this season. Heron’s return to Old Trafford concluded with a visit to a nearby pub, where he reflected on the memorable experience and the warm reception from the fans.
This heartwarming event highlights the strong bond between Manchester United and its former players, ensuring that their contributions to the club’s history are celebrated and remembered.
