Sunderland fans have witnessed a transfer window that stands out as one of the most thrilling in recent memory. The Black Cats have invested approximately £150 million to bring in fourteen new players, signaling their ambition to bridge the gap between the Championship and the Premier League. Despite the significant expenditure, Sunderland’s approach has been carefully structured to mitigate risks and ensure future flexibility.
Kristjaan Speakman said: “Look, inheriting the club in the condition we inherited it in, in the 2020-2021 season, every decision we’ve made over the last five years has had that context to it. So, we’ve done that on every transfer we’ve ever made, so it’s part of the culture and it’s ingrained in our system of making decisions. I’ve gone on record before to say that all the decisions, all the transfers we’re making, we’re never going to do that to put Sunderland in a position where it’s going to be detrimental to the future. We recognise that, hopefully we’ll see that in the direction of travel we’ve gone.”
Speakman continued: “I think it’s an important point that work that’s gone on before over the last three or four seasons puts us in the position where we are able to make the moves we’re making. If we’d have gone a different trajectory, a different style, maybe we’d have to do less. I think that would be fair to say. And now we have to be really careful and understand what the implications are of every decision. And like I said, we’ve always done that with the utmost care.”
Reflecting on the summer business, Speakman said: “We’re really pleased with the output, and I think we’ve got some really, really strong players for the Premier League who supporters are going to enjoy watching. I think at the minute everyone’s super excited, which is exactly what we want.”
Sunderland’s summer transfer activity not only focused on quality but also on enhancing squad depth, a crucial factor given the stark differences between the Championship and the Premier League. Speakman highlighted the importance of being planned and aligned, which allows the club to act swiftly and effectively in the transfer market. This strategic approach has resulted in a well-balanced team, ready to tackle the challenges of the Premier League.
The club’s early performances this season have been promising, with two wins out of three games, reflecting the positive impact of their new signings. Speakman expressed confidence in the coaching team, particularly in Regis, who recently signed a new contract. The club’s ambition and strategic planning have generated significant national and international interest, aligning with their long-term vision for success.
