Everton have successfully completed the signing of Germany Under-21 international Merlin Rohl on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy, as the club sought to bolster their midfield options before the transfer window closed. The deal, valued at just over £18 million, comes after Everton manager David Moyes identified the need for additional strength in the middle of the park, especially following a tense finish in their recent win against Wolves.
Merlin Rohl said: “It’s a big club, with great history and great fans. It’s the right time for me to join Everton. It feels like a shifting point for the club. The future looks really good and I’m excited to be part of it. I’ve watched the evolution of the club closely. With the manager and stadium, there are a lot of positives. I just love to play football and can’t wait to play in front of such passionate fans in such a great stadium. The Everton fans are passionate and demand hard work and that’s what I like as it matches what I can bring. I see myself as a box-to-box midfielder and I feel I can bring my qualities to this team after having discussions with the manager. I think versatility is a strength of mine and the style of my game will suit the Premier League.”
David Moyes said: “We’re really pleased to bring Merlin to Everton. He’s a Germany Under-21 international who will add different qualities to our existing midfield options.”
Rohl’s addition to the squad is seen as a strategic move by Moyes, who had been eager to enhance his midfield lineup throughout the summer. The urgency to finalize the deal intensified following Everton’s match against Wolves, where the team struggled to maintain control after Idrissa Gueye’s substitution. This highlighted the necessity for a robust midfield presence, which Rohl, standing at 6ft 3in, is expected to provide.
The 23-year-old has amassed nearly 50 Bundesliga appearances over the past three seasons with Freiburg and showcased his potential during the U21s Euros final, where Germany faced England. His ability to operate across various central midfield roles is anticipated to offer Moyes the flexibility and depth needed to address Everton’s tactical challenges.
Rohl’s signing marks Moyes’ ninth acquisition of the summer, underscoring the club’s commitment to strengthening their squad. As Everton look to build on their recent performances, Rohl’s versatility and physicality are expected to play a crucial role in the team’s pursuit of success in the Premier League.
