Chelsea have intensified their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons as they look to bolster their attacking midfield options following an injury to Cole Palmer. The discussions, which began in mid-July, have gained urgency due to Palmer’s fitness issues.
Maresca said: “The Palace game, he was not 100 per cent. But he’s trying to make a big effort for the club, for the team, for the fans. Tonight again he tried again – but it was not very good. Cole in the last four or five days was not 100 per cent. Today he tried the warm-up, but he felt something. So we prefer not to take any risk to get worse. And we’ll see in the next hours if it’s something important or not.”
Marcel Schafer said: “Xavi Simons is still with us. But the market is still open, you never know what might happen.”
Despite Palmer’s absence, Chelsea delivered a commendable performance, yet the potential severity of his injury has accelerated the need to finalize a deal for Simons. Meanwhile, Simons experienced a challenging night with Leipzig as they suffered a 6-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, which could mark his last appearance for the German side. Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has indicated that negotiations with Chelsea are poised to progress.
RB Leipzig director Marcel Schafer’s recent comments suggest a move to Stamford Bridge is imminent. Additionally, Chelsea’s transfer activities are not limited to acquisitions, as they are also focusing on sanctioning significant departures. Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku are among those expected to exit before the transfer window closes.
