Sunderland
Sunderland’s transfer activities have taken an intriguing turn as the club has reportedly decided against pursuing a new striker, contrary to earlier speculations. Recent reports suggested that a mystery striker deal was imminent, but it has now been clarified that this is not the case. Instead, Sunderland has bolstered their defense with the acquisition of Paraguayan international Omar Alderete from Getafe.
Barnes said: “I understand the club are not pursuing a striker at the moment. That is not one of the players they’re looking to sign, whereas a couple of weeks ago it might have been.” He added: “These things happen – bum steers, whatever you like to call them. Something obviously sparked it.”
Barnes continued: “That’s not to say you never know – towards the end of the window they might be offered a loan player. But I’m not quite sure where they stand on loans at the minute.”
Sunderland’s current striker lineup includes Guiu, Eliezer Mayenda, and Wilson Isidor, providing ample options in the center-forward position. However, the club remains open to the possibility of signing a winger should the need arise, particularly in light of recent injury concerns like that of Romaine Mundle.
In terms of defensive reinforcements, Sunderland has secured the services of Omar Alderete, marking their eleventh signing of the summer. The Paraguayan defender joins from La Liga side Getafe for a fee believed to be around £10 million, with potential add-ons. Alderete’s arrival is seen as a significant boost to Sunderland’s defensive line as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.
Alderete, who has signed a four-year contract, brings extensive experience from European club football and international competitions. His addition addresses Sunderland’s need for a left-sided center-back, aligning with the club’s game model. Although Alderete has only featured once in pre-season for Getafe, Sunderland is optimistic about his contribution throughout the season.
The club’s focus on strengthening their defense underscores their strategic approach to the upcoming Premier League campaign. With Alderete’s aggressive and athletic playing style, Sunderland aims to enhance their ball movement and overall defensive stability.
