Jayden Bogle

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is hopeful that right-back Jayden Bogle will be fit for the club’s Premier League opener against Everton. Bogle, who played a crucial role in Leeds’ Championship-winning campaign last season, has been absent from the last two pre-season friendlies against Villarreal and AC Milan due to a hip flexor injury. Farke indicated that Bogle has resumed individual training on the grass, aiming to regain full fitness.
Daniel Farke said: “Today we decided to play just two goalkeepers and for that there was not necessary for him to travel with us. [Lucas] Perri is not there at 100 per cent yet so we wanted to give him 45 minutes and Karl [Darlow] is ahead of the pecking order at the moment. He had a fantastic finish last season and also really good pre-season. So there’s no need for me to change the order.”
Farke’s comments come amidst speculation regarding the future of Switzerland international Isaac Schmidt, who filled in at right-back during the recent friendly at the Aviva Stadium but failed to impress. Schmidt has attracted interest from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, and there is a possibility he could leave Elland Road if Leeds strengthen their full-back options before the transfer window closes.
Meanwhile, the absence of goalkeeper Illan Meslier from the squad traveling to Ireland has raised eyebrows. Lucas Perri, who joined from Lyon, was given the start between the sticks, marking his first appearance for Leeds. Farke’s decision to leave Meslier out of the squad was strategic, as he opted to field only two goalkeepers, with Karl Darlow currently leading the pecking order.
Leeds United’s defensive lineup could see changes, with the centre-back position also under consideration. The club’s recent acquisition from Wolfsburg, valued at around £5 million, is expected to partner Joe Rodon in central defense against Everton, as Jaka Bijol is unavailable due to suspension.
As Leeds United prepares for the upcoming Premier League season, the focus remains on player fitness and squad depth. With the first match against Everton scheduled for August 18 at Elland Road, Farke’s decisions in the coming days will be crucial for setting the tone for the season ahead.
