Eddie Howe Bournemouth
Newcastle United is grappling with a midfield crisis as they prepare to kick off the 2025/26 Premier League season against Aston Villa. Manager Eddie Howe is currently left with only three senior central midfielders, alongside Lewis Miley, following the sale of Sean Longstaff to Leeds United and Joe Willock’s injury setback. The club is actively seeking reinforcements in the transfer market to bolster their squad depth.
Eddie Howe said: “We want six – and now we are down to four. So that is an issue for us and it is a position that we are looking at. We don’t think Joe Willock’s injury is serious. I gave it prognosis four to six weeks, that could be less. But I think it is an area we are looking at.”
Howe added: “Sandro is fine that was just a precaution from us. There are no issues there. He wanted to play but it was my decision to pull him back and make sure his knee is OK.”
He further stated: “There’s not much time left (to get a player in for Villa). And get into the intricacies of what we do. It is not easy and it is not easy for people to do that straight away. We are still active in the market and looking for players.”
The situation has forced Howe to consider relying on young talents like Travis Hernes and Alfie Harrison to support his senior players. However, protecting key players such as Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes has become a priority. Tonali recently experienced an injury scare after a knee knock, prompting Howe to exclude him from a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur as a precautionary measure. Despite being listed as a substitute, Tonali remained on the bench in casual attire, underscoring Howe’s cautious approach.
Newcastle’s transfer activity remains ongoing as they seek to address their midfield concerns. With the Premier League opener against Aston Villa fast approaching, Howe acknowledges the urgency of integrating new signings into the squad. The manager is focused on shaping his team for the upcoming challenges, emphasizing the complexity of acclimating new players to the club’s tactical framework.
The club’s ability to secure additional midfield options in the remaining days of the transfer window will be crucial in ensuring a competitive start to the season. As Newcastle navigates this period of uncertainty, the management’s efforts to strengthen the squad will be pivotal in their pursuit of a successful campaign.
