Dominic Calvert Lewis
Aston Villa is currently grappling with the challenge of replacing key players Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford, who have left the club following their loan spells. With the new season fast approaching, fans are eager for new signings to fill the void. Former Villa stalwart Gareth Barry has weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Dominic Calvert-Lewin, now a free agent, could be the answer to Villa’s attacking needs.
Gareth Barry said: “They’re two top-quality players who really bought into the [Aston] Villa culture. They were brave moves from the club because it cost a few quid in wages, but it was just unfortunate to miss out on the Champions League. I thought they’d really struggle in the league, but they surprised me, and [Unai] Emery showed what a top-class, experienced manager he is, juggling domestic and European football.”
Barry continued: “To go as far as they did in the Champions League and then just miss out on Champions League qualification on the last day, I still thought it was an incredible season. But, having said that, having just missed out on Champions League football, I think it makes the next season that little bit tougher.”
He added: “Can you bring in a couple of players to keep those levels up there again? It might be a bit more difficult. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is currently without a club after ending his nine-year spell with Everton. Once one of the most exciting prospects in English football, the 28-year-old’s form steadily declined along with Everton’s, but a new club and a new challenge could re-ignite his talent and allow him to achieve his full potential.”
Barry concluded: “When people talk about strikers and target men, there aren’t too many out there, so if you have to look at a free agent like Dominic. He was a young boy at Everton when I was there. He seemed to improve and improve, and now, unfortunately for him, the injuries have sort of stopped his career.”
Barry’s endorsement of Calvert-Lewin comes as Aston Villa looks to maintain its competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions. The 28-year-old striker, once considered a top prospect, has faced challenges with injuries that have hampered his progress. However, a fresh start at Villa Park could provide the perfect platform for him to rediscover his form and fulfill his potential.
As the transfer window remains open, Aston Villa fans will be eagerly watching for any developments regarding new signings. The addition of a player like Calvert-Lewin could prove pivotal in sustaining the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
