Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal have successfully completed the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, concluding a transfer saga that involved significant negotiation hurdles. Despite initial interest from Manchester United, Gyokeres was clear in his desire to join Arsenal, even going as far as skipping pre-season training to push for the move. The Gunners eventually secured his services for £63.7 million, slightly below Sporting’s initial valuation.
Pedro Goncalves said: “I wasn’t hurt. I wished him the best of luck. I said, ‘Finally’. This whole thing wasn’t necessary, in my opinion… but that’s football. I wished him the best of luck, and he said thank you. And that’s it. He said: ‘I haven’t spoken yet, but I may speak to thank everyone for everything. Hurt? No. Honestly, I wasn’t hurt. That’s football. It’s part of football. There are arrivals and departures. We have to know how to deal with it. We have to readjust all the time. He was a very important player, not only this season. I wish him the best of luck in the world, he marked an era in our football. He will be missed in his own way. We will have other players. The Colombian made his mark in the Segunda Division last season, netting 27 times whilst providing eight assists, and supporters will be intrigued to witness his adaptation to Liga Portugal. He is different from Viktor, but I believe he will be important.”
Frederico Varandas said: “We’re calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group. No one is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.”
The transfer saga was marked by Gyokeres’ dissatisfaction with Sporting CP’s handling of the situation, as he felt there was a prior understanding that he could leave for a top-tier club at an agreed price. Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, remained firm, indicating that Gyokeres’ strike would not influence the club’s stance. Ultimately, a compromise was reached, allowing Gyokeres to join Arsenal on a five-year contract.
Gyokeres’ arrival at Arsenal adds to an already active transfer window for the club, which has seen the acquisitions of Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Noni Madueke. Manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly still looking to strengthen his squad further, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze being a potential target. Eze, who impressed with eight goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season, has a £68 million release clause, though Arsenal are aiming to negotiate a lower fee.
