Liverpool is currently in Japan, wrapping up their pre-season Asia tour with a match against Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday. The Reds are preparing to kick off their Premier League campaign at home against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15. This season, Liverpool aims to defend a trophy for the first time since 1984, a task that Ibrahima Konate acknowledges will be more challenging than securing their record-equalling 20th championship last year.
Ibrahima Konate said: “I think this season will be more difficult, because for sure we are happy and we don’t have to forget last season, but we have to take the good parts of last season as well as the bad parts where we did not really great and work on that. We were champions last season and it’s finished now, we have to go again and try to do something even better than last season. That’s why the pre-season is very important.”
Konate’s comments highlight the importance of pre-season preparations in addressing both the strengths and weaknesses from the previous season. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s transfer activities have been a topic of interest, with the club reportedly in the market for a new centre-back following Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is one of the names linked to the Reds as they look to bolster their defensive options.
Additionally, Liverpool recently made headlines by taking their summer spending to over £250 million with the acquisition of French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69 million. The club’s strategy appears to focus on strengthening the squad while ensuring new players have the time to adapt to the Premier League’s demands.
Ibrahima Konate said: “We brought in some great players to this team but I don’t want to put some pressure on them. We just have to give them the time to adapt because they don’t know the Premier League now. But I’m sure with this team, with how the people in the team are around them, this adaptation will be easy for sure.”
Konate’s reassurance about the new signings’ adaptation process reflects Liverpool’s supportive environment, which is expected to facilitate a smooth transition for the newcomers. As Liverpool prepares for the upcoming season, the blend of experienced players and fresh talent aims to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League and beyond.
