Irvine’s journey with Burnley began when he joined the club as an amateur in 1958, signing his first professional contract two years later. He quickly made an impact, scoring on his first-team debut against Arsenal at Highbury. During the 1964/65 season, Irvine netted 22 goals, forming a formidable partnership with Andy Lochhead. His prowess on the field earned him a transfer to Preston North End in 1968 for a fee of £45,000, and he later played for Brighton.
In addition to his club success, Irvine was capped 23 times for Northern Ireland, further solidifying his status as a footballing icon. After retiring from professional football, he continued to share his passion for the game through a column in The Lancashire Telegraph, offering insights and reflections on his career and Burnley’s performances.
Willie Irvine’s legacy at Burnley is enduring, with his 97 goals in 148 appearances securing his place as one of the club’s all-time greats. His contributions to football, both on and off the pitch, will be fondly remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
