Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has expressed his confidence in new goalkeeper Lucas Perri, citing the player’s momentum and confidence as key factors in the club’s decision to sign him. Perri, who recently watched Leeds’ friendly victory over Paderborn, is set to become the club’s new number one goalkeeper, potentially making his debut against Villarreal next Saturday. The acquisition comes after Illan Meslier lost his starting role to Karl Darlow towards the end of last season.
Daniel Farke said: “It was important that with Lucas we have a goalkeeper with a really good age. At 27, it means he still – especially for a goalkeeper – young in age but already with experience. He had a really good season with Lyon. We had a difficult few situations, obviously, towards the end of the last season on the goalkeeper position. And for that, we were looking for a goalkeeper with momentum and confidence.”
The signing of Lucas Perri raises questions about the future of Illan Meslier at Elland Road. While the club is not actively pushing the 25-year-old out, there is an understanding that Meslier may seek first-team opportunities elsewhere. Farke addressed the situation regarding the club’s goalkeeping options for the upcoming season.
Daniel Farke said: “All four are under contract – it’s definitely better than to have too many goalkeepers than not enough. Obviously, I’m pretty pleased to have Illan. Yeah, we know at his age to have 100 Premier League games, more than 100 in the Championship – it says a lot about his potential, his quality. With Karl, we have a veteran who has proven, who has delivered under pressure in the final stage of last season. I’m pretty happy with this. And also Alex Cairns, a fantastic character. I’m pretty happy with my goalkeeping squad right now.”
Farke’s remarks underline the strategic approach Leeds United is taking in strengthening their goalkeeping department. By bringing in Perri, the club aims to maintain a balance of youth and experience, ensuring they have a reliable presence between the posts. The decision to sign Perri reflects Farke’s commitment to building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, while also managing the dynamics of existing players like Meslier and Darlow. As the new season approaches, Leeds United fans will be eager to see how Perri integrates into the team and impacts their performance.
