Manchester United’s pre-season preparations have been marked by notable absences and strategic decisions on player transfers. Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia were absent from the club’s US tour, while Marcus Rashford has been loaned to Barcelona. These players have been training at Carrington with what is being termed the “bomb squad,” as the club evaluates its options for the upcoming season.
Ruben Amorim said: “Some players have to find a new place to have more space in the team and others clearly show they want a new challenge and want new teams. We are just allowing these players to have time to think and to decide. If we reach a point where they have to join the team, they will join the team because they are our players.”
Amorim continued: “I know for a fact that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don’t reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that. I understand clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise and I’m ready. I’m ready to receive the players. If they have to fight each other to play, for me it is perfect.”
Amorim remarked: “At the moment, our club needs to be really careful when we sign a player. So if we have to start the season with this squad, I’m happy because all the players that are here want to be here – and that for me is the most important thing.”
The club has already invested approximately £130 million in new signings, including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon. However, the pursuit of a defensive midfielder and a striker remains a priority. Past transfer missteps have prompted United to adopt a more cautious approach this summer, ensuring that any new additions align with the club’s long-term strategy.
The situation also raises questions about Aston Villa’s interest in Garnacho. With Rashford having spent the previous season on loan at Villa, there is speculation about whether the club will pursue Garnacho to bolster their attacking options. As the transfer window progresses, the dynamics of player movements and strategic signings will continue to unfold, shaping the squad for the upcoming season.
