Evan Ferguson
Evan Ferguson, the promising young striker, has been backed to thrive in the Italian Serie A after his move to Roma. Former Albion and Inter Milan defender Ezequiel Schelotto believes Ferguson’s playing style is well-suited to the tactical demands of Italian football, particularly under the guidance of Roma’s head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
Ezequiel Schelotto said: “I was lucky enough to play in Serie A and the Premier League and they are two totally different leagues. The Italian league is a lot more tactical and the game is more passive. The Premier League is a lot more physical and active. I think that the fact Ferguson has joined a big club like Roma and a demanding coach like Gasperini will work well for him. The way Gasperini plays will mean Roma press the ball and a lot in attack and try to win it back quickly. He won’t have problems adapting because his way of playing actually fits really well with Italian football. We are talking about a young player of 20 with a lot of future ahead of him. Obviously, he will feel pressure but it will be positive. Roma haven’t won the title since the days of Gabriel Omar Batistuta, one of the best centre-forwards in the world. He will fill this role that has been missing for Roma for a long time. Hopefully, Serie A goes really well for Ferguson and he can be a leader in the Roma team. I think he is calm and he can enjoy wearing one of the best shirts in Italian football.”
Schelotto, who has experience in both the Premier League and Serie A, emphasized the contrast between the two leagues, noting the more tactical and passive nature of Italian football compared to the physicality and activity of the Premier League. He expressed confidence in Ferguson’s ability to adapt to the demands of Serie A, particularly under the strategic approach of Gasperini, known for his pressing style and quick ball recovery tactics.
The move to Roma presents Ferguson with an opportunity to fill a significant role that has been vacant since the days of legendary striker Gabriel Omar Batistuta. Schelotto highlighted the positive pressure Ferguson will face and his potential to become a leader within the Roma squad. The young striker’s calm demeanor and adaptability are seen as key assets in his transition to one of Italy’s top clubs.
Additionally, Fabian Hurzeler, another figure from Ferguson’s past, has expressed his hopes for Ferguson’s success at Roma, with the expectation that he will eventually return to Albion as a valuable asset. Schelotto drew parallels with Mateo Retegui’s success at Atalanta, suggesting that Ferguson could similarly flourish and increase his market value in the Italian league.
