Ederson Manchester City
Manchester City is reportedly considering bringing back goalkeeper James Trafford if Ederson departs from the Etihad Stadium this summer. Trafford, who has made significant strides at Burnley, is now part of the England squad and could be on the verge of a return to Manchester City. The club had included a buy-back clause when they sold him to Burnley, which might be activated soon.
James Trafford said: “I wanted to go and when the opportunity came to play in the Premier League and go to Burnley, I wanted to do that. I had known about Burnley for a long time and it was more or less done before the Euros [Under-21s]. I remember speaking to the goalie coach and he said we’ve accepted a bid. Do you want to go? And I was like ‘yeah, I want to play in the Premier League’. I wanted to play for Man City and who doesn’t want to be Man City’s No. 1? I believed I could be, but I wasn’t going to say I want to be X, Y or Z because I need to prove myself and get better and I think this is the best thing for me. He agreed and it was quite simple with the goalie coach, speaking like that. My heart was set on it.”
Trafford’s journey has been one of growth and resilience. After leaving Manchester City two years ago, he joined Burnley in a £15 million deal, where he has flourished. Despite facing challenges, including being dropped during Burnley’s 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Trafford has bounced back, excelling in the Championship last season. His performances have not only earned him a spot in the England squad but have also attracted interest from clubs like Newcastle, who identified him as a potential competitor for Nick Pope.
However, Manchester City has always kept an eye on Trafford. The buy-back clause included in his transfer deal to Burnley indicates City’s long-term interest in his development. With Ederson potentially moving on and Stefan Ortega seen as a reliable No. 2, City could activate the buy-back clause, reportedly set at £40 million, although negotiations might lower the fee.
Trafford’s understanding of what it takes to be a City goalkeeper is rooted in his early experiences. Initially starting as a midfielder at Carlisle, he transitioned to goalkeeping during a trial game, showcasing his adaptability and talent. His aspirations remain clear, as he stated on Ben Foster’s podcast, aiming for the top of the Premier League.
This potential move could be pivotal for both Manchester City and Trafford. As City navigates the uncertainties surrounding Ederson’s future, Trafford’s return could provide the club with a promising young talent ready to step up as a long-term solution in goal.
