Pep Guardiola
Manchester City has secured the signing of 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder Sverre Nypan, a move that has generated considerable excitement in Norway due to the player’s potential. Nypan, who joined City for £12.5 million, is expected to be loaned out for the 2025/26 season to gain further experience. If a loan deal is not finalized by July 28, he will join Pep Guardiola’s squad for first-team training.
Roar Vikvang said: “After the match, one of the only players to speak was Sverre, and he was focused. He said, ‘They have really good players. I have to go home to train.’ Their players were three and four years older than him, but that didn’t matter to him. He was only focusing on the quality and wanted to go home to train to be as good as them. And now, at the same age, he is much better than the players he met at that time at the same age. No excuses, only focusing on hard work. What can I do?”
Vikvang continued: “He has good technical skills. He understands the play. He’s quite fast as a central midfielder. He can use both feet, finishing with both feet, and also with the head. He scores a decent number of goals from a midfield position. But I think his best characteristic is how mature he is on the pitch. Compared to the Norwegian level, he’s really, really good for his age, no doubt.”
Vikvang added: “At that time [we signed him], we already knew that clubs abroad were watching him, and I also think some Danish clubs tried to bring him there. But Sverre and his family are patient; they are always looking for the next best step. He has lived at home with his parents until now and has developed in conditions he knows very well. I’m sure he’s ready for the next step; it’s no problem at all.”
Nypan’s career trajectory has been impressive. He made his first-team debut for Rosenborg at just 15 and has since accumulated 70 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists. His versatility allows him to play both in midfield and across the front line, although Vikvang believes his future lies as a central midfielder, particularly in the number eight role, where his ability to cover the pitch and his finishing skills can be fully utilized.
The young midfielder’s move to Manchester City follows in the footsteps of other successful Norwegian players in the Premier League, such as Martin Ødegaard and Erling Haaland. While Nypan’s immediate future might involve a loan spell to continue his development, Vikvang is confident that in a couple of years, Nypan will be ready to make a significant impact at the Etihad.
Nypan’s signing reflects Manchester City’s ongoing strategy of investing in young talents with the potential to grow into first-team stars. The club’s commitment to nurturing young players is evident, and Nypan’s addition is expected to bolster their ranks in the coming years.
