Sean Longstaff Newcastle
Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has officially joined Leeds United, marking the end of his long-standing association with the Magpies. The 27-year-old Geordie, who has been a staple at St James’ Park with 214 appearances, has moved to Elland Road for a fee of approximately £15 million, including add-ons. Longstaff, a product of Newcastle’s Academy, has signed a four-year contract with Leeds and is set to be integrated into the starting lineup immediately.
Sean Longstaff said: “I got to watch pretty much all the games and see a team that was really exciting to watch, athletic, really good on the ball. Every time I came to play at Leeds the atmosphere was amazing it was always bouncing and a really tough place to play and just looking forward to having that on my side rather than having to play against.” Longstaff added: “I think there is something to be said for a team that wants you and a club that really wants you. I think from the first time I spoke to Leeds, I sort of got a feeling that they really wanted me. It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people.”
Longstaff’s journey at Newcastle began at the age of nine when he joined the club’s Academy. His development included loan spells at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, which paved the way for his senior debut for Newcastle United in August 2018 against Nottingham Forest. Over the years, Longstaff became a key figure for the Magpies, contributing significantly to their successes, including a memorable semi-final brace against Southampton that secured a spot in the 2023 Carabao Cup final. His performance was instrumental in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup victory, their first major domestic trophy in 70 years, where his decisive penalty against Forest was crucial.
Longstaff’s move to Leeds United represents a new chapter in his career. His experience and skills are expected to bolster Leeds’ midfield as they aim to climb the Premier League ranks. The transfer also highlights Leeds’ ambition to strengthen their squad with players who have proven track records in top-flight football.
Newcastle United expressed their gratitude towards Longstaff for his contributions over the years and extended their best wishes for his future endeavors at Leeds United. The move signifies a significant change for both clubs, with Newcastle losing a homegrown talent and Leeds gaining a player with a wealth of Premier League experience.
